The BMW M1 is one of the rarest cars to ever wear the Roundel – roughly 450 units built between 1978 and 1981, designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro, powered by the M88 inline-six, and the only mid-engine production BMW in history. When the silver M1 in this case study arrived at our Reseda shop, the owner asked for the kind of comprehensive work this car deserves: engine-out mechanical service, a cooling system upgrade, drivetrain refresh, and targeted body refinishing.
Every phase of this project was documented with photos and video – from initial diagnosis through final verification. That documentation drives our process: we measure before we decide, we photograph before we disassemble, and we verify before we deliver.
The challenge
The car arrived as a running example with several systems that had reached the end of their service life. A classic M1 is not a forgiving platform for partial work – the mid-engine layout, complex cooling architecture, and long shifter linkage all reward a methodical, evidence-driven approach.
Initial scope discussion identified work across these areas:
- M88 engine: oil leak from the cylinder head gasket area, accessory drive belts aged, ignition components due for replacement
- Cooling system: original mechanical water pump requiring service; owner requested an electric water pump upgrade to improve cooling at low rpm and in traffic
- Vacuum system: multiple vacuum lines hardened and cracked
- Drivetrain: shifter linkage with worn ball ends and contaminated joints – sand and old grease throughout, no remaining lubrication
- Suspension: rear sway bar end links worn out
- HVAC: A/C system discharged, needing service and recharge
- Electrical: original battery at end of life
- Body: rocker panel finish worn on both sides (paint over factory anti-chip coating); trunk lid water vents requiring restoration and partial paint; original badges weathered (two on the trunk lid, one on the front clamshell)
Our approach
Before any teardown, we performed a systematic inspection to confirm what was failing, what was suspect, and what could only be evaluated after disassembly. This diagnosis-first approach prevents unnecessary work and ensures every line item is driven by evidence, not assumption. Each phase below was discussed with the owner before parts were ordered.
Phase 1: Diagnosis and scope definition
The M1 has a forward-tilting front clamshell that gives access to the spare wheel well, brake master cylinder, and front suspension – but the M88 engine sits behind the cabin under a separate rear clamshell. We documented every system before touching anything: compression check on the M88, leak source confirmation at the head gasket, brake hydraulic inspection, suspension play check, electrical diagnosis on the cooling fans and accessory circuits, and a full inventory of body areas requiring attention. The findings shaped the rebuild plan and informed the parts list.
Phase 2: M88 engine-out for head gasket service
Confirming an oil leak at the cylinder head gasket on a mid-engine car means engine removal – there is no shortcut. The M88 was extracted from the rear bay, and the cylinder head was lifted for inspection and reseal.
- Cylinder head gasket: replaced with a factory-specification gasket set; head and block deck cleaned, inspected and measured before reassembly
- Accessory drive belts: full set replaced
- Spark plugs: full set of six replaced with the correct heat range
- Engine oil and filter: refilled with Liqui Moly synthetic oil meeting M88 specification
This is the kind of right-size scope decision that matters: the M88 bottom end measured within specification, so the work stayed focused on what the inspection actually showed – not a speculative full rebuild.
Phase 3: Cooling system service and electric water pump conversion
The original mechanical water pump was removed, inspected and rebuilt to factory specification. The cooling system was then upgraded with an auxiliary electric water pump – a modification that improves coolant flow at low rpm and during heat-soak conditions in traffic. This is a meaningful upgrade for a high-performance inline-six like the M88, which can struggle with heat management on hot Southern California days.
The conversion required reworking several coolant hoses and reconfiguring the cooling circuit. All hoses replaced during this work were sized and routed to factory geometry where original, and to manufacturer specification for the new electric pump installation. The system was refilled with the correct coolant mix and bled properly.
Phase 4: Vacuum system and ignition
The M1 uses vacuum control for several systems, and hardened or cracked vacuum lines create driveability symptoms that are difficult to chase without methodical inspection. Every accessible vacuum hose was replaced with correct-diameter, temperature-rated tubing. With new spark plugs, fresh belts, and a clean vacuum circuit in place, the M88 had the supporting infrastructure it needed to run as designed.
Phase 5: Shifter linkage rebuild
Because the M1 carries its ZF five-speed transaxle behind the engine, the shifter linkage runs the full length of the car. The original linkage rods on this example were worn beyond serviceable limits at the ball joints – sand contamination throughout, no remaining grease, and visible play at every connection. New linkage components were sourced, fitted, and adjusted to restore positive gear engagement and correct lever feel.
Phase 6: Suspension and electrical
Rear sway bar end links were replaced on both sides to restore correct anti-roll behaviour. The battery was replaced with a correct-spec unit, eliminating intermittent starting and electrical accessory issues that had developed as the original unit aged.
Phase 7: HVAC service
The A/C system was evacuated, leak-checked, and recharged. On a classic supercar that lives in Los Angeles, a working climate system is not a luxury – it is the difference between a car the owner drives and a car the owner stores.
Phase 8: Body refresh – rocker panels, trunk lid, badges
Body work was deliberately targeted rather than wholesale. The M1’s rocker panels carry a two-layer finish from the factory: a coloured paint layer matching the bodywork, and a black anti-chip coating underneath that protects from road debris. Both sides showed wear in this layered finish and were restored to factory appearance.
The trunk lid required attention to the water vents – a small but visible detail that defines the rear of the car – and received partial repaint work to restore the original finish in those areas. All three exterior badges were replaced: two on the trunk lid and one on the front clamshell.

The results
After reassembly and a full verification procedure – cold start, idle stabilisation, heat-soak monitoring, road test for shifter feel, cooling system temperature stability under sustained load, A/C performance, and a final body inspection – the M1 was ready for delivery. The engine runs without the head gasket weep that brought it in. The cooling system holds correct temperature in traffic. The shifter engages cleanly across all five gears. The rocker panels and trunk lid present the way Giugiaro drew them. The badges sit fresh on a car that earned the right to wear them.
