History
Volkswagen was established in 1937 by the German Labour Front, and headquartered in Wolfsburg, Germany. In the early 1930s, cars were a luxury and many Germans couldn’t afford to own any transportation beyond the cost of a motorcycle. For the design of the iconic car, Austrian automotive engineer Ferdinand Porsche was hired.The German term Volk translates to "people", thus Volkswagen translates to "people's car”. Once the car was imported to the USA and was named the “Beetle”, after heavy marketing for it’s small size, the VW became the top-selling import in the USA.
